Multicultural perspectives emphasize the influence of cultural and socio-economic environments in shaping our conditioning. Growing up in diverse settings, or experiencing frequent changes and travel, can initially be confusing. However, it provides an exceptional opportunity to understand that what applies in one context may not hold in another. This realization allows individuals to selectively adopt features and rules that resonate with them.
Adaptability is a vital skill honed by navigating different cultures. By frequently changing environments and cultural contexts, one develops the ability to adapt, akin to a traveler’s openness and receptivity. This adaptability fosters open connections and leads to more meaningful interactions.
Kim Dang, a coach with extensive multicultural experiences, epitomizes these traits. Raised by a North Vietnamese college-educated father and a South Vietnamese working-class mother from an artistic family, who once was a Buddhist nun, Kim's background is profoundly diverse. Born in Germany, raised in Switzerland, and now residing in the U.S., her childhood was characterized by alternating caregivers, including her parents, neighbors, and a foster family. This upbringing ingrained in her the ability to adapt and deeply understand people, as no single adult had uniform rules.
Her early life offered a rich mosaic of cultural influences. “Living with parents from disparate backgrounds and moving across countries taught me adaptability and cultural sensitivity,” Kim reflects. “This gave me profound insights into human behavior and the ability to differentiate between an individual’s core truth and their environmental conditioning.”
These early experiences were pivotal in shaping her worldview. “I was always the new student, adjusting to different languages, customs, and norms,” she recalls. “This not only built resilience but also nurtured deep empathy for those feeling out of place.”
This foundation is integral to Kim’s coaching philosophy. “Understanding and embracing multicultural perspectives is crucial in my coaching,” she notes. “It allows me to connect with clients on a deeper level, helping them feel seen and heard, no matter their background or where they are in their journey.”
By acknowledging and respecting various perspectives, creating an environment of openness and acceptance becomes natural. Every voice is valued, and each individual feels understood.
The Power of Multicultural Perspectives in Personal Growth
Individuals from varied cultural backgrounds experience diverse realities, impacting their mental health challenges and perceptions toward counseling. Cultural backgrounds can shape attitudes towards mental health services, especially if associated with stigma. This can be a barrier to effective treatment and support.
Kim shares the story of a client grappling with career dissatisfaction. “She was in a field misaligned with her values,” Kim explains. “Through our sessions, we explored her multicultural influences, how a diverse upbringing shaped her aspirations. This helped her clarify her true desires.”
Especially women often struggle with the expectation to be "the good girl," which can be misleading if it doesn't align with personal values. Understanding one’s nature is critical to choosing a path that aligns with one's true direction. This is true even for those with strong family values, where growth requires evolving beyond previous generations to honor individual potential.
“Embracing her multicultural identity allowed my client to integrate personal values into her career," Kim continues, "enabling her to pursue a path that offered deeper fulfillment and authenticity.”
“I believe everyone has a unique gift to share with the world,” Kim asserts. “I encourage individuals to embrace all aspects of themselves—those molded by culture and personal experiences. This holistic approach empowers them to live authentically, make aligned choices, and ultimately lead more fulfilling lives.”
