How Christina Izokovic’s Advocacy Challenges Common Misconceptions About Mental Health

The global mental health crisis has taken on new dimensions in the last few years, following frantic efforts to address the scourge. Whether it's in America, Asia, or far away Africa, mental health illnesses are universal, even though approaches to manage them may differ. One of the biggest obstacles to addressing mental health challenges comes in the form of ignorance, often dressed in misconceptions, misinformation and disinformation.
The dangers of misconceptions are far-reaching, threatening the efficacy of mental health treatment and management. Thankfully, there are advocates who have dedicated their lives to unraveling the mysteries of mental health and providing the right information and resources for people to live quality lives. Christina Izokovic is at the forefront of this Advocacy, striving to ensure people struggling with mental health get the help that they need.
Creator of 'Why Not Be Authentic™," Christina's journey has been one of great inspiration for many around the world. Transitioning from a Registered Nurse (RN) of 15 years and delving into Case Management and Biotech Medical Sales to becoming a full-time Mum, has helped shape her perspectives about life, but not without some challenges. By acknowledging that she needed help, seeking it, and being open about her mental health issues, she is able to overcome it.
"It's still a process," she says. "Managing your mental health is not a one-and-done deal; it's an ongoing process. Yes, I have become a better person than I was a year ago, but I recognize that this journey is not linear, and it is hard. However, taking it one day at a time and prioritizing your own mental well-being and healing process—it’s a journey and damn worth it. Just believe in yourself and don’t give up. I created Why Not Be Authentic™ a year ago in February 2023 to enable me to share my story and connect with others out there with similar stories," she said.
Unraveling Misconceptions About Mental Health
With a growing community on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram, boasting more than 108,000 followers, Christina's platform has become a hub for not just sharing experiences but also unraveling mysteries and correcting misconceptions around mental health. With her podcast, launched in February 2023, she is setting the record straight on the facts and the faux of mental health.
"First things first, lifestyle doesn't always determine mental health. It doesn't matter what a person’s gender is, political affiliation, rich or poor, famous or not, married or not, educated or not, a U.S. citizen or not—it doesn’t discriminate. We all struggle. It may be different circumstances, different diagnoses, or different situations, but it never discriminates, and that, I think, really helps.
"A lot of people tend to think that lifestyle prevents or treats all mental health issues, but that is not always true. The most important move would be to see a therapist or psychiatrist to get the help that is needed," she said.
Another misconception often peddled around is that talking about mental health is a sign of weakness. This, according to Christina, has created a stigma that makes it difficult for people to talk about it. "What we have done with Why Not Be Authentic™ is to create a platform that supports open conversations without judgment. It is important for people to know that it takes a lot of strength to admit to mental health issues and seek help.
"Through real and raw conversations, my goal is to help one another heal one step and one day at a time, passionately contributing to the collective effort to stop the stigma associated with mental health," she said.
Another misconception she addresses is the belief by some that those who have a seemingly "perfect life" cannot struggle with mental health. Explaining that mental health issues come in different forms and dimensions, Christina says they can develop from past traumas, abuses, neglect, rejection, grief, loss of loved ones, or any other cause. "It is just like physical health. The same way anyone can have a headache or a cold, so can anyone also develop mental health struggles. It doesn't respect wealth or social status," says the mental health advocate.
Breaking Free with Christina
This passionate stay-at-home mom and advocate has one thing going for her: she has had her fair share of traumas, equipping her with experience and depth to help others deal with their own situations. From watching her parents divorce as a young girl and living with an alcoholic mother, to surviving rape as a teenager, getting a divorce when she was just 22 after enduring an emotionally abusive marriage for almost a year, and having several relapses, as well as coping with grief and loss of loved ones, the strength to go on is a source of inspiration for everyone looking up to her.
Today, Why Not Be Authentic™ is a platform where she shares everything, holding nothing back. In her words, "It is a safe space where authenticity reigns, enabling open discussions on the daily struggles of life without judgment. By stopping the stigma and providing valuable resources, Why Not Be Authentic™ aims to be a beacon of support and understanding for those navigating the complexities of mental health. Together, we’re building a community where we can be real, raw, and authentically ourselves," she concludes.
